Elkhorn Real Estate Information
Quaintly positioned in a far west corner of Douglas County, Elkhorn is a charming suburb of Omaha that was recently annexed in 2007. Founded in 1965, Elkhorn or “Elks Horn” was named after the river of the Omaha Tribe. As you ramble across the streets of downtown Elkhorn today it feels virtually untouched from its developmental roots from 1866 when Union Pacific Railroad purchased a 40 acres tract from some home settlers. Elkhorn’s river access was the perfect place for a bustling westward railroad movement to the west. With the establishment of the “Elkhorn Station” significant growth began to spring up in the mid to late 1800's.
Today residents get to experience the nostalgia of days gone by while enjoying fabulous eateries which inhabit historical buildings in downtown Elkhorn. The former one room school house & community center was a place where the rich tradition of academic excellence began. That tradition still reigns today with Elkhorn High School (EHS) “Antler Pride” and Elkhorn South High School (ESHS) “Storm”. What started as a community by the river and railway access has extended east to 168th St. then south to F. St and North to Fort St.
Elkhorn community residents revel in small town spirit while benefitting from the experience of being a part of the City of Omaha. Some highlights include downtown Elkhorn restaurants such as Bella Vita, Shevy's Steak House, Heartland Cafe and Boyd & Charlies BBQ. Further southeast, the newer Shoppes of Legacy host such fine dining as Upstream, Roja, Baby Blue Sushi & Shucks Oyster House. You won’t want to miss the one of a kind furnishings at Pearson & Company, flowers & accessories from All Seasons Floral & haute fashions from Skyze Boutique! Neighbors in the northwest portion of Elkhorn love to take a trip to the Village Pointe Cinemas and perhaps shop the Apple store, The Gap, Coach, JCrew, or Banana Republic to name a few. Village Pointe also offers an abundance of restaurants from family dining at Jimmy Buffet’s Cheeseburger in Paradise to a date night at Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse.
Don’t forget to book your kayak trip down the Elkhorn River, take a Sunday Drive down Skyline Dr. or perhaps book a round of golf. Indian Creek, Omaha’s Premier 27-Hole
Public Golf Course thrills golfers with 37 acres of fairway, 65 well-placed bunkers and 15 holes with the threat of water. Perhaps a privately owned club is more your style then Shadow Ridge is an exquisite 18 hole golf community with a club house, pool & fitness center.
All in all, Elkhorn welcomes all who come to enjoy the bounties of the growth of Omaha!
